IMAP

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a protocol for accessing email on a network. It allows for email clients to access messages on a remote filesystem as if it were local. IMAP leaves all information on the server itself as opposed to POP3 which allows the user to download the email to his/her computer. IMAP was originally developed in 1986 by Stanford University, however, it did not become popular with email providers until the mid 1990's.
